"What is wrong with these two?" That's the question that kept popping up as I listened to Pondering Pootan with Ajishio Taro & Hachimitsu Boy. Connor and Niamh are constantly challenging the listener to accept increasingly implausible scenarios and situations in a slapstick kind of way. They must have been improv comedians in a past life.
As you start the show, there is a tongue-in-cheek timeline history of the Export Audio Network followed by the idealistic boastful lyrics of the "Ningen nante" theme song.
I had put off listening to Pondering Pootan because of the cover. It is a close-up of 16-year-old Noboru Yamagushi holding up a manga volume. A dull black and white image of pixelated book covers occupy the topmost frame. Naturally I deduced Pootan was your usual run-of-the-mill manga podcast where guys talk about boring Shonen Jump series and argue about who is the strongest. If anything, the show is actually more of a parody of the genre and pokes fun at foolish readers.
Trying to be supportive of a buddy and to prove that one can record about anything, good guy Connor agrees to read Cromartie High School one week at a time. Yet he's not the only one as Niamh mischievously introduces additional fish-out-of-the-water situations, each more outlandish than the previous.
Connor does his best to adapt. Through his good fortune and the incredible stupidity of their bits, he manages to survive and even to become more comfortable with podcasting
If you're feeling a bit down in the dumps, download a n episode of Pondering Pootan to remind yourself not to take life too seriously. Give the show a chance, though it may not seem that you would like it at first glance.
